Project Overview

ENCOUNTERS  - organ and taiko music -

*Encounters: Organ & Taiko music* in the Oude Kerk is a special benefit concert

for the Vater Muller organ for 300 guests in the heart of the city of Amsterdam.

Leonard Eto, Cultural Ambassador to Europe from Japan,

will collaborate with contemporary musician Jacob Lekkerkerker and tap dancer Roxane Butterfly

to create a performance which includes Taiko (traditional Japanese drum) and the Great Organ of the Oude Kerk.

The world famous Great Organ of the Oude Kerk, was built in 1724,

and still stands in it’s original home with unrivalled acoustics for more than two centuries.

Through this passage of time, the condition of the mechanism and organ pipes require conservation and restoration,

and support is required to ensure the longevity of this piece of musical and cultural heritage.

The Oude Kerk plans to restore the great organ from 2014.

A portion of this concert’s proceeds will fund the restoration of the Great Organ.

Profile

Leonard Eto (taiko)

Leonard Eto is one o f the best and most innovative contemporary Taiko player whose vision and creativeness deeply molded the way

Taiko is performed and viewed in the world today.

Leonard has joined Japanese Taiiko group Kodo as a music director in the 80’ s, at the same time, establishing his original style as solo player, he had

given a huge influence to the music and entertainment industries.

He plays Taiko not only as a traditional Japanese music instrument, but took into modern western music.

Leonard was appointed as a Japan Cultural Envoy sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs Japan in this May 2013.

Then working mainly in Europe for one year from this August (2013) to July next year (2014).

His formation Blendrums where the Taiko dialogues with the sounds and movements of tap dancing opened up a completely new style.

Unexpected and dynamic an inspiring world of stage performance where a fusion between dance and rhythm happens. It was highly praised at all venues

when touring Europe in 2009.

Leonard has also been touring with an all women ensemble of Taiko players and tap dancers - contesting the martial,

male and power based image of Taiko performance with the excellence, fluidity and dancing play of the women.

2013 finds him combining these works into a bigger production called Theater Blendrums aiming to give more space to the creation

of a high quality stage work of dance and Taiko.

A storyline is incorporated into his former live performances, bringing Taiko, contemporary dance, tap dance, western drums, guitar and digital sounds together.

Coming of 30th year of his activity in next year, he is looking forward to working with music producers, filmmakers, choreographers and dancers while his stay in Europe.

Roxane Butterfly (tap)

Sought after for her exceptional improvisational skills, Roxane Butterfly has led a unique and spectacular worldwide career for the past 25 years.

First European tap-dancer to have gained the status of permanent resident of America in the quality of Hoofer, she has made herself known for her conceptual approach of the form, her daring musical experimentations, and her involvement for the woman cause in the field and beyond.

She has been awarded many prestigious grants all throughout career in America including the famous John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship.
